A Spanish and Portuguese surgeon perform a successful breast cancer surgery despite being 900 kilometres away. The surgeons could cooperate through the metaverse and an augmented reality system.
The European surgeons achieved medical history by executing flawless breast cancer surgery despite being separated by 900 kilometres. Pedro Gouveia of Portugal interfered in Lisbon, wearing augmented reality glasses that allowed Rogelio Andrés-Luna of Spain to supervise the operation from Zaragoza.
The two surgeons were able to communicate without being physically present at the site. A succession of successful remarks to EFE revealed that the augmented reality technology was genuinely exact throughout the procedure and gave the other surgeon great control.
Dr Gouveia believes that remote supervision has the potential to become a common feature of future work environments. Remote proctoring is now a reality, thanks to 5G.
“It simply came to our attention that first experience in which a surgeon from afar may view what another remote surgeon is doing and observing via 5G connectivity, the internet, and augmented reality.” It is simple to send surgery live from point A to point B via cable, but extending the distance is problematic, especially with current (4G) technology, which needs patience (image capture and sound are delayed),” he commented.
